Unveiling of Europe’s most modern satellite control centre

By [email protected] - 26th November 2018 - 16:29

On Friday 30 November, EUMETSAT will unveil Europe’s most modern satellite control centre.

EUMETSAT’s Geostationary Mission Control Centre has been completely made over to manage its existing fleet of satellites and the operation of its next generation from 2021. It provides a more modern work environment for spacecraft controllers while also creating efficiencies by allowing more missions to be controlled within the same space.

Drone footage was used by enthusiastic volunteers to create a video of the new control centre.

All weather forecasts for anywhere in Europe rely heavily on data from satellites controlled from EUMETSAT’s headquarters.

Dr Tobias Miethaner, Head of the Digital Society Directorate-General in the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, will speak at the official ceremony, which will be conducted in English.

A media briefing, including a tour of the control centre, will be held beforehand, with English, German and French speakers available for interview. The media are invited to stay for the official ceremony as well.
