OceanWise supplies new Tide and Weather Systems to all ABP South Wales Ports

Associated British Ports (ABP) South Wales has chosen OceanWise to supply, install and maintain new tide and weather systems across its five South Wales ports: Cardiff, Port Talbot, Newport, Barry and Swansea.

ABP is a leading UK port operator that owns and operates a network of 21 ports across England, Scotland and Wales. As a leading operator they are “backed by investment in modern facilities and equipment” that is “designed to respond to the needs of our customers whose business rely on our ports for access to international and, in some cases, domestic markets”

After conducting site surveys at each of the ports, OceanWise was able to assess the systems and sensors already in place and advise what equipment could be kept and what needed replacing.

Caroline Levey, Operations Director at OceanWise commented that “Access to reliable, real-time environmental data is now essential for busy ports who need this data to make important operational decisions. Timing and safety are critical and so the telemetry (the collection and transmission of data) and the display of data - needs to be consistently available, easily accessible and reliable”.

The OceanWise system uses specially developed telemetry which has been tested and proven in often-harsh marine environments. The data from the tide and weather sensors is displayed via the cloud-based publishing platform Port-Log, which stores, disseminates and shares this important environmental data.

The five ABP South Wales ports all now have access to their live tidal and weather data via Port-Log on a 24/7 basis, as well as historical data for long term analysis (which also enables more accurate predictions). By upgrading the sensors and moving to Port-Log, which is specially designed for marine operations, the ports will benefit from improved visibility and access to their data which should help improve efficiency.

“We are very pleased to have been able to work with ABP on this project which further cements the wider work that we do with this important and valued customer. Our close working relationship with ABP has allowed us to quickly understand their needs and offer an end-to-end solution for their environmental data” Caroline Levey, Operations Director at OceanWise.
