ENERGIC OD: New Important Results In The Apps’ Development

The ENERGIC-OD (European Network for Redistributing Geospatial Information to user Communities - Open Data) project, which gathers 15 partners from five EU member states – Italy, France, Germany, Poland and Spain - is now well into the third year of its term.

It aimed at the implementation of an innovative architectural approach based on a set of Virtual Hubs (VH) developed by integrating an existing and successful broker framework with other effective technologies to provide users with a single point of access to geospatial datasets.

During its implementation, the VH technology has been further improved through the feedback offered by the design and development of ten diverse pilot applications, which tested in full their capabilities and co-developed the practical features of the VH software.

Recently, a very important result was reached by the OnoMaP app, which is currently used by the EPFL (Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne) to measure the noise environment in Geneva Canton. “OnoMaP” app is led by partner CNRS-Lab-STICC and generates noise maps via simulations of crowdsourcing noise data recovered from a smartphone application. It is coupled with open traffic and Open Street MaP data. The app aims to put the citizen at the centre of a data acquisition process, and highlights the community’s initiatives to involve the public. The data collected by the users through smartphones will fed the OnoMaP infrastructure from the Noise-Planet project (www.noise-planet.org) and will also be reused in a "local" research project that aims to determine the impact of noise on human health.

This collaboration is a good example of participation in the interaction between citizens and the academic world and illustrates that data can be reused for different purposes (health, urban planning, etc).

Another newly conceived service of ENERGIC OD project is offered by the GeoPan APP PRO/LIGHT which supports a more informed planning process by using multi-temporal Open Data. This could contribute to a more sustainable use of land and to a better management of the Built Environment, including risk prevention objectives.
