ABPmer reviews MMO's marine information system

ABPmer, a leading marine environmental consultancy, has been contracted to consider how the Marine Management Organisation's online Marine Information System might be further developed to support its programme of work to deliver integrated marine management and better regulation.

The latest version of the Marine Information System (MIS) was launched in July 2015 to facilitate the publication and implementation of adopted marine plans in England.

The online tool combines web design with geographic information systems (GIS) to provide access to marine plans and the underpinning spatial data. It also includes an area for public consultation in relation to the evidence used in the marine plan development process.

The current value and future potential of MIS has been recognised by the MMO and others and as such this project is being undertaken to provide an independent review of the tool.

Natalie Frost, Project Manager at ABPmer said “Marine data and information is key to many decisions so it’s not surprising the accessibility and engagement mechanism provided by MIS has received a lot of positive feedback.

"Our work will identify how MIS can be enhanced to provide greater benefit to the MMO as well as to wider government interests and stakeholders.”

ABPmer is recognised as a leading authority on marine planning having been involved in national scale projects since 2004. The company has expertise both in strategic broad scale marine planning for the UK Government, devolved administrations, agencies and the European Commission. It also routinely advises marine developers on site selection and feasibility studies.
