Open Source Power: MariaDB integrates Rasdaman

By Eric Van Rees - 5th June 2025 - 05:17

rasdaman's datacube technology is being integrated into MariaDB, an open-source database system.

As a leading open-source database system, MariaDB is continuously expanding its functionality. A collaboration has now been launched at Constructor University to achieve this integration. MariaDB invited developers and students to a hands-on, inspiring workshop entitled 'Code, Vectors, and Vision' at Constructor University in Bremen — a unique opportunity to explore the worlds of open source, innovation, and AI.

Peter Baumann (CEO of rasdaman) and Michael 'Monty' Widenius (founder of MySQL and MariaDB) spoke about the impact of extending the MariaDB open-source database system with the equally open-source rasdaman Community Version. Baumann, an expert in scientific data management, gave a presentation entitled 'Array Databases: Supporting the Fourth Major Data Type”, providing a comprehensive overview of the development and importance of array databases for the efficient management of complex, multidimensional data.

rasdaman datacube technology supports scalable queries on large raster data sets on an algebraic basis, and is used in n various scientific fields,  particularly within the geosciences. Future collaboration will address challenges such as location-transparent federation, temporal semantics in geo datacubes and integrating artificial intelligence. The datacube tool will be integrated soon.
