Agreement Paves Way to Improved Capital Project Construction Execution through Advanced Work Packaging

June 27, 2016 – Bentley Systems, Incorporated, a leading global provider of comprehensive software solutions for advancing infrastructure, today announced a new Global Framework Agreement with Shell The agreement is designed to improve Shell’s capital project construction execution through automated 4D/5D construction management solutions provided by Bentley as a managed service. The solution will be deployed as part of Shell’s ProjectVantage program and be based on Bentley’s ConstructSim Work Package Server (CWPS). This innovative offering, which simplifies work packaging by automatically turning project data into construction tasks, adheres to the Construction Industry Institute’s (CII’s) and Construction Owners Association of Alberta’s (COAA’s) Advanced Work Packaging methodology.

The Global Framework Agreement with Bentley supports Shell’s ProjectVantage program providing a multi-vendor integrated data-centric approach to capital project delivery. This industry-leading program is aimed at delivering safer and better projects faster by:

  • improving cross-discipline and supplier collaboration;
  • controlling data throughout the capital project lifecycle; and
  • applying standards and enabling replication.

Shell selected ConstructSim Work Package Server as the foundation of its construction management solution to:

  • enhance its ability to visually plan and execute work safely, avoiding premature mobilization and downtime and removing constraints that can impact safety, logistics, materials and labor availability, and permits and documentation;
  • ensure more effective “engineering readiness” through the application of advanced work packaging to improve constructability; and
  • improve field productivity, driving better schedule reliability and maximizing time on tools, driving safety, mitigating risk, and ultimately resulting in substantial cost savings.

Greg Bentley, Bentley Systems CEO and executive sponsor of the company’s Shell relationship, said, “Shell is leading the response to changes in the energy and petrochemical industries by introducing ProjectVantage the next step in the management of capital projects, and we at Bentley are proud to be playing a part in this industry game changing programme. As a Shell ProjectVantage Ecosystem supplier, Bentley will help Shell achieve ever-higher levels of performance in construction execution and project delivery through our Advanced Work Packaging software that automates engineering, construction, and installation work packaging processes.”

He continued, “ConstructSim Work Package Server meets each of the ProjectVantage primary objectives by improving visibility into the path of construction, enhancing collaboration and promoting unparalleled efficiencies; simplifying the work packaging process, facilitating tighter control of construction tasks and schedules with information interoperability and mobility; and adhering to industry best practices as defined by the CII and COAA.”

Martin Swaine, Shell 4D/5D Programme Manager, said, “Shell has been pleased with the trend of benefits seen during the pilot phase together with Bentley and we look to build on these improvements with our supply chain to collectively deliver safer and better projects”.
