Collaboration between University of Southampton and Worldsensing is part of SPRINT business support programme

The University of Southampton and Worldsensing, a global Internet of Things (IoT) technology specialist, have announced a new collaborative project. The project will explore the correlation of results from underground IoT-based monitoring systems with data from satellite information. The results of this project will have implications for improving early warning of potential hazards, safety of mining operations, environmental and post-mining monitoring.

The project is supported by the UK-wide SPRINT business support programme that offers funded access to data analysis expertise from the University of Southampton. The University of Southampton and Worldsensing will develop a cost-effective method to monitor mine surface displacement at large scale, integrating a network of ground and underground sensors with imagery from the new constellation of European satellites.

The project will employ the remote sensing expertise, storage and processing capabilities of the University of Southampton to analyse, synthesise and evaluate the information contained in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) datasets. The University of Southampton will use high specification computers, and licensed and open source software for GIS and remote sensing.
