8th BaSYS User Conference with record number of participants

By [email protected] - 12th July 2017 - 13:39

Of gorillas and geoinformation systems: UC8 from 21 to 22 June 2017 in Essen, Germany with a record number of participants was dedicated to diversity.

Useful information about biodiversity and an appeal to recycle raw materials from IT hardware and mobile telephones were the event’s central themes. Eight technical presentations and 18 workshops offered plenty of opportunities for networking and discussions about the wide range of applications and development possibilities of the BARTHAUER products. The expectations of the industry visitors and speakers were once again fully met this year.

More than 90 participants from Germany and Austria were welcomed by Claudia Hickmann, Head of Sales at BARTHAUER, who immediately drew attention to the motto of this year’s BaSYS User Conference: diversity. It quickly became clear to the participants that this referred not only to the wide variety of possible applications for the innovative BARTHAUER software products, but also to the biodiversity of the flora and fauna that is worthy of protection. This ties into BARTHAUER’s current used mobile telephone raw material donation campaign “A mobile phone for the gorilla” (www.barthauer.de/handys). After the extensive welcome, Andreas Voigt of the town of Minden opened the presentation series. In his presentation “QGIS for Municipalities – Town of Minden Example”, he reported in detail on the successful use of an open geoinformation system under BaSYS. Next, Martin Waldl from the BARTHAUER partner ddl GmbH spoke on the topic of “Rehabilitation Documentation Concept Presentation”. After lunch, Siegmund Maciossek from ITWH GmbH Hanover followed with his presentation “ISYBAU XML 2017 – Update of the Exchange Format”. As the final speaker on the first day of the conference, Stefan Hitzfelder (HI PI Zivieltechnicker GmbH) in his presentation on the topic of “Data(base) Misuse – the Dosage Makes the Poison” noted that accessing what has become a tremendous data density in the meantime is not always for the benefit of the network operators or the entity doing the accessing.

On the second day of the conference, Marc Hoffmann (Kisters AG) and Stefan Sudbrock (town of Rheda Wiedenbrück) started on the topic of “Sewer Network Administration and Operation: Experiences with Optimisation Potential using BaSYS”. Subsequently Dominic Spinnreker-Czichon of DHI spoke on the topic of “Water Management 4.0”, discussing the increasing importance of digitalisation in the water industry. He was followed by Kim Gebauer (eagle eye technologies) and Dr Karl-Heinz Röder (GAUSS+LÖRCHER) with the topic of “Increasing Efficiency in Infrastructure Management – Mobile and Exact Data for Systematic Sewer and Street Maintenance Management”. Mr Gebauer and Dr Röder discussed the benefits of the integrated management of above and below-ground infrastructure using a pilot project as an example. The second day of the conference was concluded with the presentation “Integrated Asset Management with BaSYS ISA” by Dr Heiko Spitzer (entellgenio GmbH), identifying possibilities of future-oriented network management for supply networks through strategic maintenance and rehabilitation planning.

Workshops were offered in parallel to the presentations. These provide an opportunity for participants in smaller groups of up to 16 persons to actively explore various themes in greater depth. The supporting programme on the first evening of the event proved itself as another permanent pillar to deepen the exchange of experiences. This year BARTHAUER invited participants on a tour of the “most beautiful mine in the world”. In glorious summer weather, experienced guides gave a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Zeche Zollverein”, providing insights into an exciting episode of German industrial culture from the past century with their profound knowledge. Later on the evening drew to a culinary and social close in the nearby restaurant “Casino Zollverein”.

The participants had an evaluation form for the event to fill out during the conference. Industry visitors completed the sentence “I attend the UC because...” as follows:
“...the mix of workshops and technical presentations combined with the excellent supporting programme is informative every year and beneficial for our own projects.”
“...I gain a lot of ideas for optimising my day-to-day work.”
“...I want to network with other users, see other solutions and implementations, and in particular educate myself further in the workshops.”

The BARTHAUER team thanks all participants for attending and for donations of more than 60 used mobile telephones, and is already looking forward to UC9 in 2018. The venue and event date will be disclosed in a timely manner this autumn.
