Pilot trials of a new .NET streetworks information-sharing solution promise to keep London on the move
Transport for London (TfL) is the worldâs largest strategic transport authority. It has responsibilities under the 2004 Traffic Management Act to proactively collaborate with street works undertakers and other highways authorities in the region to minimise traffic congestion due to road works. The task has received an added boost thanks to a collaborative development in which SIAâs dataMAPx GIS control has been embedded within NDMCâs Encanvas .NET-based Enterprise Information Flow Architecture to deliver an exciting new solution.Designed to assist large corporations and multi-agency groups to painlessly gather and share information, Encanvas rapidly builds database-driven information flows that join up operational data silos. By incorporating SIAâs dataMAPx GIS control, Encanvas dramatically reduces the cost of deploying GIS/spatial data applications. Encanvas, with SIAâs embedded functionality, has been deployed by the LondonWorks programme, a TfL initiative, in a highly praised pilot to support the coordination of long-range plans for road works. The system incorporates geospatial data to provide an accurate view of where planned road works were likely to overlap.SIAâs dataMAPx control within Encanvas allows geospatial information to be gathered from existing data sources and displayed on a geographical map view.Benefits resulting from the long-range roadworks pilot include:⢠All stakeholders have a much clearer and more visually intuitive geographic view of data, that traditionally had been exchanged via spreadsheets⢠Considerable savings to the agencies concerned, estimated by TfL to be many millions of pounds⢠Disruptions to the road network have been avoided by coordinating planned activities⢠Economies have been gained by trenchsharingor pragmatic harmonisation of surface re-instatement activitiesThe biggest beneficiary, however, is likely to be the general public, who can be assured of less congestion and speedier journeys.âSIAâs dataMAPx GIS software was ideal to embed into Encanvasâs .NET-based architecture and has rapidly become a core component of our solutions for the Street Works user community," says Andrew Lawrie, Encanvas technical architect. He adds, "Like Encanvas, dataMAP provides the adaptability now demanded by information managers that want to deploy best-fit solutions on mobile, PC or web platforms.âPhoto: SIAâs dataMAP GIS embedded in NDMCâs Encanvas at TfL (©Copyright Bartholomew Maps)
