Maxar satellite imagery of ammunition depot explosion in Kazakhstan

US-based Maxar has released imagery of the aftermath of a large ammunition depot explosion that occurred on 24 June near the Kazakhstan city of Arys

These before and after WorldView-2 satellite images from Maxar (together a SWIR image acquired by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite that helps penetrate the smoke and clearly show the outlines of the active firesl) reveals extensive damage, as well as evidence that the blast widely scattered burning debris across fields and the nearby city. Small fires can be seen still burning within the destroyed depot. According to press reports, Kazakhstan’s Emergency Situations Committee said the blast occurred at around 9:20 a.m. following the outbreak of a fire at the military base.
