27 October 2009 - We announce that gvSIG Mini has been born. gvSIG Mini is a new open-source project (GNU/GPL licensing applies) aimed at cellular phones, including Android and Java-based phones.
gvSIG Mini is a a free viewer for free access maps based on tile services, with WMS client, address searching, POIs, routing and more features.
gvSIG Mini is not an official gvSIG project, but it joins the gvSIG family through non-official gvSIG downloads at the links below.
gvSIG Mini for Android!
gvSIG Mini for Android is the version of gvSIG Mini suitable for Android-based phones. Android is an operating system for mobile devices such as phones, notebooks, etc. It was initially developed by Google and later the Open Handset Alliance.
If you have an Android phone, you should download gvSIG Mini for Android version (see download link below).
gvSIG Mini for Java!
gvSIG Mini for Java is the version of gvSIG Mini suitable for Java-based phones. Java compatible phones are those which support Java ME CLDC specifications (generally known as Java compatible phones). See your phone specifications to check if your phone supports Java Micro Edition (ME) CLDC 1.1 / MIDP 2.0.
If you have a Java compatible phone, you should download gvSIG Mini for Java version.
What is Phone Cache?
Phone Cache is a gvSIG extension that allows to download a configurable set of map tiles from a tile service, to transfer the tile set to your mobile phone's SD card in order to use as a cache of map tiles.
This will allow gvSIG Mini to use pre-cached tiles, avoiding the download of the tiles over the air from a remote tile service, and so transmission delays and costs. It's suitable for offline running, speed improving and minimum transmission costs.
So far, Phone Cache only generates tile sets for 'gvSIG Mini for Java version', but we are working to share tile sets between gvSIG Mini Java and Android versions.
gvSIG Mini has been developed by Prodevelop. We are pleased to receive your comments, suggestions, contributions, etc. We are open to collaborate with anyone willing to use or modify this project, or work in similar ones.
