eMapSite gives CAD users more power to interpret spatial data

The online digital map provider, eMapSite, is offering CAD users an enhanced versioning of Great Britain’s most detailed topographic mapping data.

Architects, planners, site developers and engineering consultants will be among those to benefit from improved data processing and presentation of the OS MasterMap Topography Layer in CAD software.

The enriched output is represented as a DWG AutoCAD drawing file format, the most popular way for CAD users to receive OS MasterMap.

eMapSite has taken the various themes of the Topography Layer and introduced new categories with descriptive terms designed to be intuitive for CAD.

Buildings, roads, railways, rivers and natural environment features are structured and colour-coded in a way that can be easily adjusted depending on project need.

The internal OS MasterMap structure of polygon outlines can be switched on and off. This enables users such as civil engineers to interpret an entire stretch of road without it being split into the separate feature identifiers that show polygons at junctions and roundabouts.

eMapSite has also added standard Ordnance Survey symbology that many CAD users will be familiar with from paper maps, such as for showing coniferous woodlands and triangulation points. Direction of flow symbols in roads and rivers can also be switched on and off as required.

One of the clients who trialled the enhanced output is the planning and design consultancy Barton Willmore. Michel Loftus, the company’s senior landscape CAD technician, said: “eMapSite have come up with a tailored solution with a number of clear advantages for CAD users. They have put a good deal of effort into understanding our requirements for more intuitive layering, feature definitions and colouring.”

Liz Scott, eMapSite’s head of customer services, said: “We’ve been working very closely with our CAD clients and the various improvements we are making are all about giving them more flexibility in how they define and visualise the individual map components they want to work on.

“We’ve gone deep into the themes of the Topography Layer and broken down the components in a way that is intuitive for CAD and will help users save time.”

More than 70% of OS MasterMap orders to eMapSite are delivered in DWG format, illustrating the demand from CAD users.
