Wildgoose launches ‘Exploring England’ deskmats

Wildgoose, the UK’s leading supplier of geography resources, has created an
exciting new collection of educational deskmats to support the teaching of
geography at Key Stages 2 and 3. The Exploring England Deskmat set combines
high quality aerial photographs of important sites around the country with a
corresponding Ordnance Survey map, additional reference information and pupil questions.

The deskmat set includes 15 individual A3 sized deskmats illustrating the varied nature of the English Landscape, including the 2012 Olympic site, Alton Towers and Mevagissey. Exploring England is the latest addition to the existing Wildgoose range that includes other regionally focused sets together with
sets illustrating a range of topical issues.

The Exploring England Deskmat set uses the highest quality photography to show important locations throughout England from the air. Corresponding Ordnance Survey maps coupled with detailed reference information, pupil questions and guided activities makes the set a stimulating resource for the teaching of
geography at Key Stages 2 and 3. The deskmats are ideal for local area and contrasting area studies, the development of an understanding of maps and aerial photography interpretation exercises.

“This was a natural extension to our existing, highly popular, range of deskmats,” said Lynette Rowbottom, Education Manager at Wildgoose. “The aerial images engage pupils and teachers alike, encouraging them to explore and question our diverse landscape. When combined with Ordnance Survey maps and
reference information, the aerial photography and suggested pupil activities form a valuable resource to support the teaching of geography.”

The Exploring England Deskmat set includes 15 A3 (420 x 297 mm), fully encapsulated deskmats. Each deskmat features a vertical aerial photography plus corresponding Ordnance Survey map, including scale bar and compass on the front, plus information about the locality and a set of pupil questions on the reverse. The set features the following locations: Alton Towers, Cowley, Forest of Dean, Fosse Park, River Severn, Hastings, Manchester, York, Heathrow Airport, Wembley, Pennines, Mevagissey, Grasmere, Rivers Soar/Trent and the 2012 Olympic site.

Wildgoose also offers a range of other deskmats that can be purchased as
complete sets or individually including Scotland from the Air, Wales from the Air (also available in a Welsh Language version) and topical deskmat sets including subjects like Environmental Issues and Settlement, Coastal and River features.

Wildgoose has been providing resources for education for over 11 years and has grown into one of the UK’s leading publishers of geographical teaching aids. Wildgoose is a member of the British Educational Suppliers Association and a registered content provider for the Curriculum Online scheme.

This Month's Burning Issue...
Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.
This month's burning issue:

HAVE WE REALLY LEARNT THE LESSONS FROM LAST YEAR’S FLOODS?

Flooding costs associated with extreme weather, both financial and emotional, have increased considerably over the last decade, and experts have predicted this trend is set to continue.

Paul Livett, Chairman of GroundSure looks into how increasing the use of flood risk information in property transactions can help to ensure both residential and commercial transactions are conducted on a truly informed basis, with buyers being made aware of environmental risks prior to purchase.

Over 2.2 million homes and small businesses in the UK are located in areas considered at risk of flooding, and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said that 570,000 of these face a high risk of flooding. The floods in June and July last year left approximately 48,000 households… More…
