Wildgoose Awarded Geographical Association Gold

Wildgoose Awarded Geographical Association Gold

Wildgoose, a leading supplier of education resources, has been presented with a highly prestigious Gold Award for its ‘Coast to Coast’ Photopack and CD. The award, which recognises materials that make a significant contribution to the teaching of geography in schools, was presented at the Geographical Association’s Annual Conference attended by the Schools Minister Jim Knight MP and Chief Executive of the Ordnance Survey, Vanessa Lawrence.

The award-winning ‘Coast to Coast’ Photopack and CD, part of the range of photographic teaching aids developed and published by Wildgoose, uses high-quality visual references to support classroom teaching and stimulate learning and discussion. Supporting teaching of both physical and social geography at Key Stage 2, the pack focuses on the coastline of the British Isles and includes detailed case studies and teaching notes. The fully-interactive CD features the case studies and photographs from the pack, and a range of additional activities.

“This is a tremendous achievement - we were up against some very tough competition!” said Kathryn Lucas, Education Business Manager at Wildgoose. “This award recognises the dedication and hard work of the entire team; from conception, through development, to market launch this has been an exciting and rewarding project to work on.”

The judges were unanimous in awarding the Wildgoose ‘Coast to Coast’ Photopack and CD the Gold Award as they felt it provides an excellent resource for children as well as comprehensive support for non-specialist teachers in planning and teaching relevant and stimulating geography. In fact one judge commented ‘this resource takes Key Stage 2 geography teaching towards the point where every school should wish it to be. It is an outstanding resource that is cross-curricular without losing the geographical approach’.

Presented at the Geographical Association Annual Conference, awards are given for materials, which are considered to make a significant contribution to geographical education and professional development. The mission of the Geographical Association is to promote the teaching of geography and to communicate the value of learning geography for all. With around 7,000 memberships including teachers in primary and secondary schools and further education, academic geographers, universities and teacher educators and trainers, the Association crosses academic divides and claims to be a specialist community of practice.

Wildgoose has been providing resources for education for over 12 years and has grown into one of the UK’s leading publishers of geographical teaching aids. Wildgoose is a member of the British Educational Suppliers Association and a registered content provider for the Curriculum Online scheme.

This Month's Burning Issue...
Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.
This month's burning issue:

HAVE WE REALLY LEARNT THE LESSONS FROM LAST YEAR’S FLOODS?

Flooding costs associated with extreme weather, both financial and emotional, have increased considerably over the last decade, and experts have predicted this trend is set to continue.

Paul Livett, Chairman of GroundSure looks into how increasing the use of flood risk information in property transactions can help to ensure both residential and commercial transactions are conducted on a truly informed basis, with buyers being made aware of environmental risks prior to purchase.

Over 2.2 million homes and small businesses in the UK are located in areas considered at risk of flooding, and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said that 570,000 of these face a high risk of flooding. The floods in June and July last year left approximately 48,000 households… More…
