Top Level Geospatial Professionals From Defence & Civilian Organisations Attend Europe’s Biggest Geospatial Intelligence Conference In London


Over 650 participants attended the DGI 2009 conference at the QEII Centre in London between the 19th and 22nd of January this year.

DGI 2009 brought together GIS, Remote Sensing, Operations, and Imagery and Analysis leaders in a forum designed to facilitate discussion and debate the development of geospatial intelligence capabilities across the globe. Addressing the practical use of geospatial information in scenarios such as international conflicts, humanitarian disasters, crime, security, border control, arms treaty monitoring and global climate change, the event focused on how to build the necessary infrastructure and architecture to take advantage of geospatial intelligence capabilities, as well as tackle the challenges of interoperability so that organisations can collaborate effectively with each other.

Dozens of top level executives from defence and civilian organisations gave case study strategic presentations focusing on the growing role of GIS in military and piece operations.

Chaired by Jill Smith, President & CEO of DigitalGlobe the conference was opened by Major General John Rose CB MBE, Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff (Intelligence Capability), MoD UK with a focus on the future of the UK defence GIS services.

The conference received great support from NGA, the US geospatial intelligence agency, with keynote addresses from Lloyd Rowland, Deputy Director, NGA, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, US and Jack Hild, Deputy Director, Source Operations, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, NGA, US.

Case study presentations focusing on in-theatre use of GIS were made by a number of senior officers from MoD’s across the world, including USA, UK, France, Norway, Sweden, Israel.

The conference was fully supported by NATO with the following executives giving presentations on NATO’s GIS strategies and current case studies. Dag Wilhelmsen, General Manager, NATO C3 Agency and John Teufert, NC3A Geo-Officer, NATO C3 Agency gave a plenary presentation focusing on NATO’s future GIS implementation strategies.

A special two day session was dedicated to case studies in the civilian sector, with presentations on use of GIS in Heathrow Airport, Police, Transport Police, Ambulance and emergency services.

The conference was complemented by an extensive exhibition of the latest GIS technology from top solution providers from around the world.
