The GeoInformation Group Embarks on Countrywide Aerial Photography Programme
UKMap production increases availability of UK aerial photography

The GeoInformation Group, publishers of UKMap and Cities Revealed aerial photography, announces today a new countrywide flying initiative to capture high-resolution aerial photography in support of the UKMap large-scale mapping programme.

Aerial photography is one of the eight spatial data layers of UKMap providing the principle source for the mapping. Ambitious plans to capture large areas of the country in support of UKMap mean an even greater availability of off-the-shelf aerial photography to purchase.

To manage this extensive programme, The GeoInformation Group will undertake all-season data capture. Traditionally, UK aerial photography is captured during the summer months when trees are in full leaf however flying during the winter months has significant benefits. It not only ensures that there are no leaves on the trees and gives un-obscured views of the built environment but also offers a greater chance of data capture success.

Recent advances in digital camera technology will help to ensure that the level of detail in areas of shadow is maximised and with a planned capture of 10cm resolution the new imagery will provide highly accurate and up-to-date surveys.

The GeoInformation Group is offering the procurement of this aerial photography in one of two ways:

1. as part of UKMap, or 2. as an independent dataset through its Cities Revealed brand with the option to acquire UKMap at a future date and at a discounted price.

“As the UKMap programme rolls out across the UK users will benefit from a significant increase in access to highly detailed and up to date aerial photography. The availability of this imagery as an off the shelf option not only helps to reduce costs and delivery times but also ensure that users keep their archive as current as possible”, comments Alun Jones, Managing Director of The GeoInformation Group.

The GeoInformation Group is already talking to early adopters for this procurement programme. To find out more, call 01223 880077 or email info@theukmap.co.uk.
