The Building Centre hosts two seminars on digital technology and its ability to change the towns and cities in which we live
Almost imperceptibly, the virtual world has started to have a major impact on the mapping, planning and design of our cities. Where once the printed map and physical model were king, GIS and 3D virtual modelling now offer efficient alternatives to visualisation and participation. These are converging with different types of data to create a better understanding of the city.
Software can now predict and refine how the future city will perform, from pedestrian movement to tall buildings. New communication systems allow greater interaction between the city and its inhabitants from the tiny screen on a mobile phone to giant screens the side of a building facade.
Digital Cities is a series of events for developers, planners and designers to gain better knowledge of the potential of new digital information systems. It brings together research, case studies and design technology for those (not necessarily IT experts) who will benefit from the opportunities and efficiencies offered by IT systems.
FIRST SEMINAR:
24 February 2009, 16.00 19.00
Digital Cities: Digital Tools for Urban Design
This seminar introduces the tools and techniques that help planners and designers exploit these resources to create better urban environments more efficiently.
Speakers include:
Anna Rose, Director, Space Syntax on evaluation tools for urban layout
Dr Jake Desyllas of Intelligent Space on software for modelling and presenting pedestrian flows
Christian Derix of Aedas Architects on the application of predictive and optimising software to building heights, movement and layout.
Alvise Simondetti of Arup on creating an integrated 3D model to look at the environmental impact of the urban form.
Jim Farley of Autodesk on looking at an ecosystem for urban design in which tools and improved access to data leads to more effective decision making and reduced costs
SECOND SEMINAR:
11 March, 9.00- 13.00
Digital Cities: Enriching Digital Mapping for City Planning
This seminar introduces the information resources which are now being employed by developers planners and designers to create and improve new urban neighbourhoods.
Speakers include:
Sir Terry Farrell, Farrell and Partner on data and democracy
Dr. Andy Hudson Smith, Research Manager, CASA on latest developments in 3D mapping and virtual planning environments
James Bamford, Business Development Director, Microsoft Virtual Earth and
Justin Saunders, Technical Director, eMapSite on databases of geographical information for design and planning
Didier Madoc Jones, Managing Director, GMJ Designon the project application of 3D city models
Professor Alan Brimicombe, Head, Centre for Geo-Information Studies, UEL on the integration of social and other data with digital mapping.
Giles Lane, Director, Proboscis on using IT in public consultation exercises
