The British Cartographic Society is delighted to..

The British Cartographic Society is delighted to announce the publication of a new booklet – Cartography – an introduction.

Cartography - an introduction is a comprehensive A6 booklet covering the fundamentals of mapping and is a must have for anyone working in the geographic information industry.

Mary Spence MBE, past president of the BCS and one of the UK’s leading cartographers said” This booklet has been published by the BCS in support of its Better Mapping Campaign. The booklet’s aim is to give basic information on what works well in map design and to get the world thinking about maps and their messages. The advice in this booklet will help anyone who is producing maps regularly in their work.”

The booklet was prepared on behalf of The British Cartographic Society by Giles Darkes, Cartographic Consultant, and Mary Spence MBE. It contains information on the following:
• why good cartography is important
• map functions and map types
• how maps are made
• feature selection and generalisation
• symbolisation of areas, lines, points
• data quality and map quality
• the basic principles of map design
• colour and text on maps
• page layout and marginalia
• tips on how to make better maps
