HENRY JOHNS CARTOGRAPHIC JOURNAL AWARD
Since 1975 the BCS has presented an award to the author of the most outstanding article published in The Cartographic Journal as judged by the editorial board. The award is sponsored by Lovell Johns and is named after Colonel Henry Johns who founded the company in 1965 as a traditional cartographic service company primarily serving the mapping needs of map publishers.
WINNER
Mark Harrower of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The winning article appeared in volume 44 issue 4 and is titled “Unclassed Animated Choropleth Maps”.
AVENZA AWARD FOR ELECTRONIC MAPPING
The Avenza Award is open to entries designed and created for electronic format. This year, qualifying entries included Web-based products, CD-Roms, presentations and databased derived mapping.
The judges were very impressed with the entries this year and have decided to present two Commendations as well as a winner.

ORDNANCE SURVEY MASTERMAP AWARD FOR BETTER MAPPING
The Ordnance Survey MasterMap award is to encourage innovative and stimulating map products derived from, and composed mainly of, Ordnance Survey's MasterMap data. The award is run with the support of Ordnance Survey.
Unfortunately, an award will not be made this year as it was the opinion of the judges that the entries did not fulfil all of the criteria as stated in the rules. The problem was not with the quality of the products, but they felt there was minimal or no innovative use of OS MasterMap data.
JOHN C. BARTHOLOMEW AWARD FOR SMALL SCALE MAPPING
The John C. Bartholomew Award is sponsored by Collins Bartholomew.
Unfortunately, it was decided that not enough entries fully met the criteria so there is no winner. The judges did feel that one entry merited a Commended certificate.
COMMENDATION
Books Division of National Geographic Society, Washington DC
National Geographic Atlas of China
