RICS DISASTER MANAGEMENT COMMISSION AND UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD LAUNCH DISASTER MANAGEMENT PROCESS PROTOCOL TO PROMOTE EFFECTIVE RECONSTRUCTION EFFORTS
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors’ (RICS) Major Disaster Management Commission, in a joint project with the University of Salford, has launched a Process Protocol to provide a framework to coordinate disaster relief, recovery, rebuilding and prevention efforts. The Process Protocol, which has been put together with advice from academics, professionals and disaster experts, is targeted at decision makers in Government and international organisations, as well as the wider build environment sector.
Structured protocol for disaster relief is key in ensuring that post disaster reconstruction efforts are environmentally sound and make the most of the capabilities and skills of those involved. The Process Protocol provides a tool to boost this effort by providing a common approach, standard documents, definitions and terminology for rebuilding programmes.
David Tuffin, Commission Chair and former RICS President, said: “Agencies from around the world have well established processes for immediate humanitarian aid following a major disaster. However, the stage between the initial event and rebuilding is less well established and it is the aim of the Process Protocol to provide a clear framework for these efforts.”
