PenBay Selects Trimble’s Indoor Mobile Mapping....

PenBay Selects Trimble’s Indoor Mobile Mapping Solution to Offer Expanded Services

Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB) announced today that PenBay Solutions LLC has selected the Trimble® Indoor Mobile Mapping Solution (TIMMS) for indoor mapping service. PenBay, a leader in bringing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology inside the building, will use TIMMS as a key enabler to expand PenBay’s current solutions for real property and public safety applications, helping facility managers, space planners and emergency response agencies understand the critical infrastructure of buildings.

The announcement was today at the International LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) Mapping Forum 2010.

“Trimble has taken a very innovative approach to adapting their technology depth in spatial measurement and positioning to provide an innovative mapping solution for building interiors,” said Stu Rich, PenBay’s Chief Technology Officer. “By combining Trimble technology with PenBay’s expertise in indoor GIS data solutions, we have put together a package that is exciting to us and our clients.”

The goal of PenBay’s expanded service is to offer an advanced GIS solution to clients interested in mapping the as-built interior environment. The collective capabilities that the companies bring to this market result in rapid, accurate data collection and visualization solutions using an innovative indoor 3D LiDAR platform from Trimble.

PenBay selected TIMMS after successfully collaborating with Trimble to provide the City of Philadelphia with accurate data and a 3D view of the City’s busiest underground areas. The city has been working with the data to address facility management, public safety and real property challenges. "Philadelphia is excited to be at the forefront of this tremendous advance in 3D in-building and sub-surface spatial data collection. Combined with other City initiatives, such as video surveillance and advanced enterprise GIS, I believe this will play a pivotal role in the City achieving its goal of becoming one of the safest large cities in the nation," said Jim Querry, director of Enterprise GIS, City of Philadelphia.

About the Trimble Indoor Mobile Mapping Solution (TIMMS)

TIMMS is an indoor mobile mapping solution for facilities management. Using innovative technologies, the solution can produce fast and accurate maps, allowing users to translate their environments directly into 2D & 3D models of structured interiors. The solution enables building owners, facilities managers, engineers and construction professionals to more efficiently plan and manage building assets and properties.

Using traditional methods, mapping an indoor space can be time consuming. A tripod, laser and camera are set up to capture measurements and images at various locations. The equipment is then moved and set up multiple times until all perspectives of a room are captured. With the new Trimble solution, a simple walk-through of an interior space allows for 360 degree indoor coverage. Geo-referenced spatial data is captured accurately and quickly as the mobile system moves through the building at walking speed. The solution integrates active and passive sensors with an intuitive user workflow to enable true indoor GIS capability. Maps and models, covering thousands of square feet of indoor space, can be created in minutes and entire buildings can typically be completed in a day.

Trimble’s solution can make indoor mapping easier and more affordable, and be used in a variety of indoor mapping applications. The availability of indoor map data on a large scale can change the way assets are managed. The Trimble indoor mapping capability is also ideal for security, law enforcement and event planning. Accurate information on building layout and physical surroundings can enable building security personnel to react quickly and effectively during emergency situations or special events.
