One-Day Management Courses on Geospatial Development Projects 29th & 30th September 2009
- Hosted by ConsultingWhere -
In today’s economic climate, establishing the Return on Investment (RoI) in terms senior management understand is even more critical to getting your geospatial project approved. Once it is “off the ground” delivering it on time and to budget then becomes the focus.
ConsultingWhere is offering two separate courses on consecutive days in September 2009 to provide you with tools and techniques to meet these challenges:
~ 29th September - Building the Business Case for Geospatial Development Projects
~ 30th September - Managing Successful Geospatial Development Projects
Building the Business Case for Geospatial Development Projects:
This established course is on 29th September 2009. It covers business case development for projects involving geographic or location-based information.
Geospatial development projects are often dogged by the inability to gain the attention of the Chief Executive and establish a Return on Investment (RoI) that convinces the Chief Financial Officer. In a tough economic climate, it is particularly important that any project that requires investment can show a very rapid return so as not to undermine already tight budgets.
This course introduces a “light touch” approach, providing attendees with a set of tools and techniques that they can take back to their organisations and apply quickly and effectively.
The course is designed for business analysts and project managers faced with the challenge of justifying investment in geospatial technology and projects.
KEY TOPICS:
- The concepts and language of business case development;
* How to match geospatial applications with your organisation’s key business drivers;
* Modelling techniques to identify the business process changes to improve efficiency;
* Cost and benefit assessment, including measurement principles for “intangible” factors;
* Where to find case studies that provide evidence for Return on Investment on comparable projects;
* Prioritising and evaluating of alternative options;
* Crafting the executive presentation.
Managing Successful Geospatial Development Projects:
This course on 30th September 2009 covers the essentials of managing projects involving geographic or location-based information.
“I found the whole course useful and felt that there were key points from every session – that to me is always a winner…it was particularly useful to think about how GI projects differ from other projects and focusing on risks.” [Course feedback]
The course is aimed at experienced project managers new to geospatial development and those managers with some familiarity of this type of development but who want to deepen their knowledge.
KEY TOPICS:
* The factors that make geospatial development projects different;
* People - selecting and building the team, clear roles and responsibilities. Engaging the champion at the top;
* Knowing the risks on geospatial projects and how to manage them;
* Setting off in the right direction: 10 things to do at the start of the implementation;
* Planning for change;
* Courage and leadership – saying things management don’t want to hear but also celebrating success;
* What goes wrong – reasons for failure;
* Understanding data – modelling, access, quality, maintenance, storage and management;
* Recovering from setbacks – crisis management;
* Monitoring and controlling progress – avoiding death by a thousand cuts.
