Oldham Council develops new citizen-facing web....

Oldham Council develops new citizen-facing web-based mapping tool based on Cadcorp SIS software.

New tool enables residents to find out about regeneration activities in their neighbourhood.

Digital mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) software developer Cadcorp has announced that Oldham Council has developed a web-based digital mapping tool for use by its citizens to enable them to keep track of regeneration activity in their neighbourhood. The system has been developed by the council, in conjunction with Cadcorp, using Cadcorp SIS – Spatial Information System to provide the core GIS capability.

Using the new tool, visitors to the council’s web site can view the progress of any physical regeneration activity being planned and implemented within their particular area of interest. The interactive plans displayed to users via the web show all regeneration activity at both a borough-wide and at a more local level, with detailed information on each activity taking place within all eleven area committee boundaries. Citizens are able to see a range of projects, for example plans to improve community and road safety, as well as environmental projects, master-plan areas and regeneration programme areas such as those covered by the New Deal for Communities.

Councillor Mohib Uddin, Oldham Council cabinet member for regeneration, said, “This is a great tool for people to find out more about what is going on in their area. They can see where new developments such as wellbeing and health centres are going to be built. I would encourage people to visit our web site and check out these interactive maps for themselves”.

The development of this new web-based application follows last year’s implementation by Cadcorp of a spatial data warehouse for Oldham Council, using Cadcorp’s spatial data warehouse utilities and associated consulting services, together with a licence of Cadcorp SIS Map Modeller to assist with data management. This Oracle-based spatial data warehouse builds on an existing Cadcorp installation at Oldham Council and provides an open, standard, corporate GIS data store for the council, its existing Cadcorp software, and applications based on other GIS software.
