NAVTEQ Launches NAVTEQ Transport in the UK

NAVTEQ Launches NAVTEQ Transport in the UK
Specialised Map Data Enables Routing for Fleet Management & Large Vehicles

NAVTEQ (NYSE: NVT), a leading global provider of digital maps for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions, has launched NAVTEQ Transport in the UK. It features specific information to support more informed routing decisions in the transportation industry.

NAVTEQ worked closely with industry leaders to gather the requirements for this new product and the decision to collect the data in the field was critical to ensure the company’s stringent requirements for accuracy were met. “All the data has been collected on the road by our geographic analysts,” explained Peter Beaumont, NAVTEQ Customer Marketing Director Enterprise Europe. “It became clear in talks with our fleet and transportation customers that our own field verification was essential to meet and exceed the high expectations of the industry in terms of accuracy and freshness.”

The data includes the following key categories: physical restrictions; legal restrictions; warning information; and transport specific Points of Interest. Physical restrictions such as height, weight, width and length as well as details about the type of restriction are vital in order to help avoid costly ad-hoc detours. Legal restrictions are explicitly tailored for lorry prohibitions - e.g. no right, left or U turns, no trucks or trailers allowed and specific speed limits. This helps to inform drivers early and to avoid surprises or fines.

In addition, warnings of steep hills, sharp bends, areas with high lateral winds and risk of grounding will help safeguard overall route integrity. Transport specific Points of Interest round out the data whilst making day to day driving a little easier.

Better Planning Made Easy
Including over 20 attributes, this data can significantly improve drivers’ efficiency and ability to plan routes. Better route plans will result in fewer miles driven, less vehicle wear and tear and ultimately improve end-customer satisfaction as more accurate arrival times enable smoother operations overall.

“Two key applications are likely for NAVTEQ Transport,” added Peter Beaumont. “First, back office IT applications for fleet management and logistics, and second, satellite navigation systems – making it accessible to anyone driving a large vehicle.”

NAVTEQ Transport has already been launched in Germany and France and won an award as ‘Most Innovative Product’ at the SITL Transportation Trade Show in Paris last year. Further European coverage is planned and the next launch is expected in the Netherlands and Belgium later this year.

This Month's Burning Issue...
Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.
This month's burning issue:

HAVE WE REALLY LEARNT THE LESSONS FROM LAST YEAR’S FLOODS?

Flooding costs associated with extreme weather, both financial and emotional, have increased considerably over the last decade, and experts have predicted this trend is set to continue.

Paul Livett, Chairman of GroundSure looks into how increasing the use of flood risk information in property transactions can help to ensure both residential and commercial transactions are conducted on a truly informed basis, with buyers being made aware of environmental risks prior to purchase.

Over 2.2 million homes and small businesses in the UK are located in areas considered at risk of flooding, and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said that 570,000 of these face a high risk of flooding. The floods in June and July last year left approximately 48,000 households… More…
