Mobile mapping gets highway works inspectors on the road
Mayrise Systems has launched a PDA based system for monitoring and mapping works on the highway. An industry first, this latest development of the MAYRISE Street Works Management software will facilitate mobile working, reduce unnecessary administration and increase operational efficiencies by providing Street Works Inspectors with instant access to back office information in the field.
Incorporating MapNow - the easy to use street-level mapping solution from Mayrise - inspectors can identify and locate works on Ordnance Survey maps. Optional GPS satellite positioning provides an instant check on site locations and allowing more precise mapping of works. The hand held devices can directly access work schedules, update inspection checklists and display the Street Works Register.
MAYRISE Mobile Street Works has been specifically designed for UK Local Authority Street Works Inspectors. The mobile version of the system helps inspectors identify works, complete inspection reports and schedule further appointments. Daily schedules together with works checklists are all accessed from a series of easy to use drop down menus while data collected in the field is input to the device and can be directly transferred to the main system using a wireless connection. High-speed mobile communications also enables the devices to communicate with the centralised Street Works register giving Inspectors access to detailed works records in the field.
Brand new functionality developed for MAYRISE Mobile Street Works also provides integration with Microsoft Office. Appointments scheduled in the field are synchronised with the inspector’s Outlook calendar providing diary visibility between the office and remote mobile workers. MAYRISE Mobile Street Works is EToN 5 compliant and is already being trialled at a number of Local Authority Sites across the UK.
“Traditionally, Street Works Inspectors leave the office each morning armed with a paper schedule of sites to visit and a checklist to be filled out for each inspection,” commented Mark Clarke, Managing Director of Gloucestershire based Mayrise Systems. “On return to the office at the end of the day these paper records are then manually transferred into the street works management system. MAYRISE Mobile Street Works can completely streamline this process making inspectors more efficient and reducing administration and the possible introduction of errors.”

Adopting Cloud computing can save money, but good governance is essential to manage the risk argues Mike Small
