The UK’s Transport for Buckinghamshire is providing live highways maintenance information to the public through a new online Service Information Centre. The result of a real-time web innovation from Masternaut Three X, the system has been implemented by Transport for Buckinghamshire - a partnership between Buckinghamshire County Council and highway infrastructure services provider Ringway Jacobs.
This first of its kind website will provide the public with real-time information and communications. They will be able to log on to the website to report highway defects, monitor progress of planned and emergency roadworks, track road maintenance teams, and monitor gritters and grass cutting teams in action.
The Masternaut-powered website will also provide an information feed to Transport for Buckinghamshire’s Twitter service, allowing residents and road users to receive timely information about highway network disruptions. This will also update the public about the latest news from the service.
Live information is captured and transmitted using the advanced Masternaut satellite vehicle tracking system, which monitors the Transport for Buckinghamshire highways maintenance fleet. Vehicle movements are displayed on the website in real time, giving the public complete transparency of highway maintenance and treatment work.
The system also provides fast response to urgent calls or web reports from the public. It allows office-based staff to assign the nearest and most suitable maintenance teams, with the right equipment and qualifications to deal with the problem. Jobs can be sent direct to team leaders’ PDAs using Masternaut X Service mobile software.
“This is a really exciting project and the first of its kind in the country. The Service Information Centre will help members of the public track what our teams are doing and communicate with us much more effectively. We hope this will help the public have a full understanding of how we work. For example, all our winter gritting and roadworks in Buckinghamshire will be mapped. Members of the public will be able to see when the gangs last visited and when they are due to visit again. By providing more information online, it will mean that the public won’t have as much of a need to have to call us to find out information but will be have instant access available to them online instead,” said Valerie Letheren, Cabinet Member for Transport for Buckinghamshire.
