MAPPING THE FUTURE in the UK - Contract

Improvement and Development Agency - 14 March 2008

MAPPING THE FUTURE

Without accurate maps of their area any local council would find their work impossible to do.

To achieve better efficiencies and cost savings, there is one contract negotiated on behalf of all authorities, which now includes the whole of local government in England, Wales and Scotland including all councils, national parks, police, fire and other local authorities.

This contract is now due to be renewed and the process is about to start to look for suppliers for the Mapping Service Agreement. It is negotiated by the Improvement and Development Agency.

The new contract is due to finally be in place by 1st April 2009.

The previous agreement has brought a savings of £100's millions to local government over a four year period and other benefits include:

* Economies of scale – by lowering costs through bulk purchasing leverage, and single procurement costs

* delivery and management of a core set of information across the sector

* a contractual framework to deliver a shared service infrastructure of address and street data capture and usage within local government

* introduction of performance monitoring on suppliers

* Managed changeovers to new products

* Access to services that help meet eGov commitments

This Month's Burning Issue...
Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.
This month's burning issue:

HAVE WE REALLY LEARNT THE LESSONS FROM LAST YEAR’S FLOODS?

Flooding costs associated with extreme weather, both financial and emotional, have increased considerably over the last decade, and experts have predicted this trend is set to continue.

Paul Livett, Chairman of GroundSure looks into how increasing the use of flood risk information in property transactions can help to ensure both residential and commercial transactions are conducted on a truly informed basis, with buyers being made aware of environmental risks prior to purchase.

Over 2.2 million homes and small businesses in the UK are located in areas considered at risk of flooding, and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said that 570,000 of these face a high risk of flooding. The floods in June and July last year left approximately 48,000 households… More…
