Leica Geosystems supports 6th International Symposium on Digital Earth in Beijing
The International Society on Digital Earth recently celebrated its 10th anniversary with the 6th International Symposium on Digital Earth in Beijing, China, from the 9-12 September. Leica Geosystems Geospatial Solutions Division supported the event and contributed with several scientific papers.
The founding of the International Society on Digital Earth in 1999 was inspired by the work of former Vice-President Al Gore on climate change and in particular his work on "The Digital Earth: Understanding our planet in the 21st Century". It promotes development, harnessing, use and sharing of digital information, data, technology and solutions to monitor, measure and forecast natural and human activity on the planet to better overcome the global environmental challenges and contribute towards long-term sustainability.
“As a company, Leica Geosystems has a long history of developing innovative tools to monitor and measure the Earth”, said Ruedi Wagner, Business Development Manager GSD for Greater China during the opening ceremony, “So the topic „Digital Earth in Action“ of this conference is well-timed and relevant, not only for us as a manufacturer, but for us as scientists and global citizens who ought to think about our world of the future and what place we are going to leave for future generations.
It is therefore, and I speak on behalf of my many colleagues around the world, that we are honored to be associated with the ISDE…..Over the next few days we are looking forward to be working with you on finding sustainable solutions and implementable actions to build a better and brighter future for the Digital Earth.”
The 6th International Symposium on Digital Earth concluded with a revision of the first Beijing Declaration from 1999, which can be found together with scientific abstracts and background information under www.isde6.org and www.digitalearth-isde.org.
