Island Communications brings Navmii portable navigation to Mauritius
· Mobile phone Satellite navigation for tourists made simple
· Available on smartphones including iPhone and Portable Navigation Devices
Island Communications Ltd. (ICL) and Navmii today announced the availability of the Navmii turn-by-turn navigation application for Portable Navigation Devices (PND) and smartphones in Mauritius.
With Navmii, visitors can search for an address by city, street or junction, or simply select a point on the map. Navmii then calculates the best route to the destination, and automatically reroutes if you miss a turn. Navmii is able to locate and then navigate to thousands of Points of Interest (POI) including shops, cafes, hospitals, petrol stations and tourist sites.
Ajmal Abdool, General Manager, Island Communications Ltd., said: “Mauritius is an 1800 square kilometre paradise and tourists visiting the island will usually hire a car. We wanted to develop a smart solution that could provide visitors with a simple, affordable fully featured navigation option during their stay.”
ICL has licensed Navmii for mobile phones, including the iPhone, meaning visitors can download the software and maps for Mauritius, turning the phone into their own personal sat-nav device. Mauritius will see a major uplift in tourism this year as a result of the World Cup in South Africa, with tourists including a stay on the island within their visit. Moreover, the Navmii software can be used as a safety utility to keep track of loved ones as well as for pets.
Peter Atalla, CEO of Navmii said: “Having launched Navmii on iPhone in Nigeria, the introduction of Navmii in Mauritius with ICL shows the demand that exists throughout Africa for the best in mobile navigation features and functionality. These are exciting markets to explore, and we are extremely pleased to be leading the charge across a range of devices to suit all users.”
“Our ultimate vision is to become market leader in location services, both locally and internationally,” continues Abdool. “Navmii is the perfect tool to help us use our vast knowledge of standards and experience in the field of location technology to deliver breakthrough navigation products in Mauritius and for the broader African market.”
