Intelligent Addressing helps NSG users

Intelligent Addressing helps NSG users

Intelligent Addressing has developed a new conversion service for users of the National Street Gazetteer (NSG). This will benefit users of the street information who are unable to import the latest format of the NSG, which from 6th April 2010 is being published in Data Transfer Format (DTF) 7.1 only.

In April 2009, Intelligent Addressing, the National Custodian of the NSG, published this streets information dataset in DTF7.1 format to be compliant with the British Standard for the representation of a street. Since then, Intelligent Addressing has run a dual hub, with the data in its original NSG-CSV format as well as the new format, in order to allow users to migrate from the old to the new format. As of April 2010, the NSG will only be published in the DTF7.1 data format.

The DTF 7.1 format offers a number of advantages over the old format:

- It is compliant with BS 7666:2006, the latest format of the National Standard ‘Spatial datasets for geographic referencing’

- It allows the incorporation of Additional Street Data such as height, width and weight restrictions, and one way exemptions

- It includes direction of travel information

- Incorporation of dual languages in support of the Welsh Language Act.

Updated versions of the NSG are published on the second working day of each month. The new service that Intelligent Addressing will provide gives clients access to the converted data through a dedicated ftp site on the day that the NSG is published. This means that there will be no interruption in supply to organisations that depend on this vital dataset for streetworks information.
