III edition of NAVTEQ Global Challenge launched

Third edition of the NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge® in Europe launched

Registration opened 6 August 2007 and closes 12 October 2007 at www.LBSChallenge.com

NAVTEQ, a leading global provider of digital map data for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions, has officially launched the third edition of its Global LBS Challenge in Europe, building on the success of this now well-established and innovative programme which was initially created in North America in 2003.

The programme invites developers around the world to build location-enabled applications which work with mobile phones and/or wireless handheld devices using dynamic positioning technology and NAVTEQ maps.

Over time, the Global LBS Challenge has been expanded in a number of ways, including last year’s prize pool valued at nearly $2 million in cash and data licenses; and complimentary access to NAVTEQ map data and tools and platforms from the sponsoring companies.

There are five categories in which to submit applications:

1. Content
2. Enterprise
3. Entertainment
4. Navigation
5. Social Networking

Entries will be judged by an elite panel representing major wireless carriers, industry experts and venture capitalists – previous judges included senior executives from Nokia, BT, FotoVista, Orange, O2, Sony, Dixons and Lehman Bros.

The Grand Prize Winner (who can earn €35,000 in cash and one three-year NAVTEQ territory license to the value of €225,000) and three Runners-Up Winners (who could walk away with €7,500 in cash and one three-year NAVTEQ territory license to the value of €150,000) will be announced at the 3GSM in Barcelona on 12 February 2008.

Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.

Paul Livett, Chairman of GroundSure looks into how increasing the use of flood risk information in property transactions can help to ensure both residential and commercial transactions are conducted on a truly informed basis, with buyers being made aware of environmental risks prior to purchase.

Over 2.2 million homes and small businesses in the UK are located in areas considered at risk of flooding, and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said that 570,000 of these face a high risk of flooding. The floods in June and July last year left approximately 48,000 households… More…
