High Definition Surveying reaches milestone with 100th Leica Geosystems 3D Laser Scanner sold in the UK and Ireland market
Leica Geosystems, manufacturer of world leading measuring and positioning equipment, announces the landmark sale of the 100th high definition 3D laser scanner in the UK and Ireland market. The 100th scanner, a Leica ScanStation 2 was sold to Surrey based topographic, architectural and hydrographic survey company Sterling Surveys who were presented with the accolade at the Geo 8 World of Geomatics Conference earlier this month in Coventry.
Established in 1983 Sterling Surveys provides surveying services for all types of topographic, measured building, photogrammetric, inland hydrographical and aerial survey. The purchase of the new scanner will provide the company with the capability to generate 3D data scans for as-built and topographical surveys. The high-speed pulsed scanner provides:integrated survey grade dual axis level compensator, full field of view and a range of up to 300m at 90% reflectivity.
"We are delighted to receive the award for the purchase of the 100th HDS Scanner from Leica Geosystems. Sterling Surveys has always purchased survey equipment from Leica Geosystems due to their commitment to high quality and reliability. The excellent support both in hardware and software has continued to underpin our buying strategy and has made Leica Geosystems the ideal choice when selecting a High Definition Scanner”, states Peter Wightman, Technical Director, Sterling Surveys.
Peter continues: ”Initially we plan to use the scanner to complement our existing survey workload such as building elevations and topographical surveys of roads. Our further challenge is to explore the growing demand
for 3D imagery and to offer client based use of point cloud data using the Leica TruView software. We see the need to inform our clients of the exciting new survey service and would welcome the opportunity to demonstrate its potential.”
“The UK is truly leading the field in Europe with the phenomenal adoption rates and realisation of High Definition Surveying technology in the marketplace. The demand for the versatility, speed and complete capture of
point cloud data from clients is mounting as awareness levels in the market is growing no thanks to the support, collaboration and success of our early adopters,” comments Tim Badley, HDS Sales Manager, Leica Geosystems Ltd.
“The technology being developed is getting faster, more comprehensive and accurate and we are working closely with educational establishments to realise the demand for skills and to further the knowledge of 3D laser
scanning in the UK. This is an exciting time for High Definition Surveying and we are dedicated to support our customers to reach a new level of surveying.”
Sterling Surveys also purchased the full Leica Cyclone software suite including Cyclone Register, Model, CloudWorx, Cyclone ll Topo and
Publisher. Cyclone Register geo-referencing software automatically matches targets or modelled objects from different scanning positions to create a system of constraints, which is used to integrate the point cloud data into a single coordinate system. Cyclone Model and Survey offers a powerful graphics display engine for the visualisation and manipulation of point clouds and models. Cyclone Publisher offers the functionality for non technical personnel and clients to view and measure point cloud data online using the TruView Plugin for Internet Explorer.

Flooding costs associated with extreme weather, both financial and emotional, have increased considerably over the last decade, and experts have predicted this trend is set to continue.
Paul Livett, Chairman of GroundSure looks into how increasing the use of flood risk information in property transactions can help to ensure both residential and commercial transactions are conducted on a truly informed basis, with buyers being made aware of environmental risks prior to purchase.
Over 2.2 million homes and small businesses in the UK are located in areas considered at risk of flooding, and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said that 570,000 of these face a high risk of flooding. The floods in June and July last year left approximately 48,000 households… More…
