Government awards geographical data contracts to Ordnance Survey and Landmark Information Group

Contracts for supplying a range of geographical data to central government were announced by Planning Minister Baroness Andrews today.

The Pan Government Agreement, managed by Communities and Local Government, provides almost 100 national bodies with access to core geographical data at an affordable price and under consistent licensing terms.

Ordnance Survey and Landmark (in conjunction with Dotted Eyes) will supply a wide range of mapping products for 4 years from 1 April 2009. The contract is worth £19.8million annually.

Planning Minister Baroness Andrews said:
“Understanding geography is vital to many key government functions.

“This contract will extend the range of geographic data available at good value for money and under straightforward and flexible licensing arrangements.

“The new arrangement will provide a strong platform to increase government’s use of geographic information.”
Contracts were awarded following a competitive tendering process. The new PGA will include a broader range of products including road routing and points of interest data and will be provided at excellent value to the taxpayer. At the same time, licensing has been simplified.

PGA data supports a diverse range of applications, including land registration, monitoring agricultural payments; planning digital television switchover; estate management and habitat mapping.

The new arrangements will complement the height and aerial photography data from the Next Perspectives consortium which PGA members can already access.

As well as licensing data on attractive terms designed to facilitate effective service delivery and data sharing, suppliers will also provide a range of support including dedicated helpdesks, account management, newsletters and training.
