Geomaat takes delivery of StreetMapper 360

Geomaat, an independent surveying specialist based in the Netherlands, has placed an order for the world’s most accurate mobile laser mapping system, StreetMapper 360. Following rigorous trials of the system Geomaat has selected the vehicle mounted laser scanning solution to support expansion of their international surveying operations. Geomaat has also agreed to work in partnership with 3D Laser Mapping, the UK developers of StreetMapper 360, to jointly develop new solutions for the European surveying market.

StreetMapper 360 has been designed for the rapid 3D mapping of highways, infrastructure and buildings using vehicle mounted lasers. Travelling at normal road speeds, StreetMapper 360 offers a 360-degree field of view with high precision mapping to a range of 300m. Capturing every detail along the highway corridor including barriers, gulleys and overhead wires, surveyors can create highly accurate 3D computer models for new scheme planning, maintenance, wide load route assessment and post-incident investigations.

“StreetMapper 360 has three major advantages over traditional surveying techniques and other solutions on the market; Speed, Accuracy and Safety,” commented Jolle Jelle de Vries, Managing Director of Geomaat. “With the inclusion of StreetMapper 360 in our surveying toolbox we hope to expand our operations internationally and also diversify with applications for coastal monitoring, 3D urban modelling and rail infrastructure mapping to name just a few.”

Before ordering the StreetMapper 360 system Geomaat undertook a serious of rigorous field trials in partnership with 3D Laser Mapping. During surveying of highways in Holland the StreetMapper collected data was compared with more traditional survey measurements obtained using total stations and levelling and the difference in results was found to be less than three centimetres in the both X,Y and Z.

“Using StreetMapper 360 it will no longer be necessary to undertake surveying in environments that may place the surveyor at risk,” continued de Vries. “Travelling at normal traffic speeds we can capture data to the same exacting standards, in a fraction of the time and without risk to personnel or other road users.”

StreetMapper, the result of a joint venture between 3D Laser Mapping, German guidance and navigation specialist IGI mbH and technology company Riegl. The system employs the latest laser scanning technology for improved field performance and accuracy, precision navigation including a solution for reduced GPS coverage in urban areas, combined with a flexible, modular configuration and increased ease of use and deployment.
