One thing we can be assured of in May is at least one week of unseasonably warm weather usually preceded and followed by heavy rain showers. Since 2003 the GeoDATA roadshow has become a permanent fixture in the GI community calendar during May. Come rain or shine Training4GIS, the training and consultancy division of The GeoInformation Group, are sure to be touring the UK bringing this unique series of educational events to the GI community.
Every year leading GIS software and data specialists support the GeoDATA tour and in the last few years a successful media partnership with Geo: connexion UK has helped to promote the tour to the GI community at large. This year the tour has made stops in London, Manchester, Cardiff and Glasgow and will reach it’s final 2008 destination in Belfast in November.
The focus of this year’s roadshow was on the application of data and its business benefits. Attendees were offered twelve presentations over the course of the day as well as an opportunity to network with speakers and peers during break outs in the accompanying exhibition area. The thought provoking presentations kept the audience enraptured, particularly the topical environmental presentation by Dr Alun Jones of The GeoInformation Group entitled Tackling Climate Change: The Role for Geographic Data. GeoDATA 2008 partners’ presentations included a valuable industry insight into Advances in GPS Data Capture, The Future of GI and it’s Industry by AGI, Web Delivery of Mapping Services, Data Interoperability, Open Standards, 3D and 4D Geological Data Applications and a debate on Imagery versus the Vector Map.
With around 700 attendees in 2008 the GeoDATA roadshow is one of the largest and most popular events in the GI calendar. Training4GIS are keen to continue the GeoDATA in 2009 and actively seek out feedback from the audience, ensuring that future tours will be as successful and well attended.
“As always excellent presentations that cover all of the GIS spectrum. As with all the other GeoDATA conferences I have attended, Manchester 2008 has proved to be informative, productive and an invaluable source of GIS expertise.” Anthony Horrigan, English Partnerships
“Comprehensive seminar with good mix of content. Thank you!” Peter Van-Velzen, Forestry Commission Wales.
Plans are already underway for GeoDATA 2009, the tour will be stopping in London, Edinburgh, Sheffield, Birmingham, and Belfast…and may well extend to Dublin too.

Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.HAVE WE REALLY LEARNT THE LESSONS FROM LAST YEAR’S FLOODS?
Flooding costs associated with extreme weather, both financial and emotional, have increased considerably over the last decade, and experts have predicted this trend is set to continue.
Paul Livett, Chairman of GroundSure looks into how increasing the use of flood risk information in property transactions can help to ensure both residential and commercial transactions are conducted on a truly informed basis, with buyers being made aware of environmental risks prior to purchase.
Over 2.2 million homes and small businesses in the UK are located in areas considered at risk of flooding, and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said that 570,000 of these face a high risk of flooding. The floods in June and July last year left approximately 48,000 households… More…
