GEO-9 Counts Down to Success

GEO-9 Counts Down to Success

With only one week until GEO-9, the UK’s only dedicated geospatial trade exhibition, opens its doors the organisers have announced an exciting show-floor seminar programme. Designed to complement the commercial demonstrations and attract visitors from beyond the traditional target audiences the show floor seminar series will see the next instalment in the debate Cartography vs Internet mapping, an exploration of the UK Location Strategy and EU INSPIRE Initiative and advice from the Federation of Small Businesses on surviving and thriving in challenging time. All sessions are free to attend and a part of an attractive visitor package that includes free onsite parking and a free trial subscription to leading trade magazines. GEO-9 takes place on the 01 and 02 of April 2009 at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry. Although pre-registrations have now closed, visitors can register on the day, for further details visit www.worldofgeomatics.com.

One of the highlights of the of show-floor seminars programme will see Mary Spence, MBE and past president of the British Cartographic Society, who sparked international debate when she blasted online maps, once again addressing the issue with “Does cartography matter when Google and Microsoft are just a few clicks away?” while speakers from the Association for Geographic Information will address the topic “How GI affects us all: the UK Location Strategy and the EU Inspire Initiative”. In response to the current economic climate The Survey Association (TSA) has sponsored “Strategies and tactics for surviving and thriving in challenging times” presented by Mark Levey of BKL Accountants and Colin Willman, Chair of the Federation of Small Businesses Education, Skills and Business Support Policy. Additional sessions include contributions from Ordnance Survey, Leica Geosystems, ESRI UK, Environment Agency, Trimble, SP Property Services and Faro UK.

GEO-9 will also co-host a half-day seminar supported by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Raising awareness of new technology, best practice and ideas, ‘Property: the changing paradigm’ will include sessions covering topical issues such as ‘Flood Risk and Insurance: it’s all about location and height’, ‘Neighbour Disputes, Boundaries and the Law – there’s now a better way’ and ‘Energy Performance Certificates: efficient and timely surveys’.

“In a time when many events are struggling to attract support and visitors through the door it is essential that you offer more than just the standard offering,” said Stephen Booth of PV Publications, organisers of the event and publishers of Geomatics World, GIS Professional and Engineering Surveying Showcase. “The package we have put together, including the show-floor seminars and social events, should ensure an educational, informative yet relaxed event for all involved.”
