Cybit's fleet tracking solution

Cybit

May Gurney saves 10 percent on fuel costs within three months of implementing Cybit's fleet tracking solution

Live fleet data enables strategic fleet management Reduced fleet size by five per cent due to more efficient management

May Gurney, the integrated support and construction services company, has installed the Fleestar-Online solution – from leading Telematics Service Provider Cybit – into the maintenance fleet of its Highway Services sector. The implementation has shown a saving of almost 10 percent in fuel costs alone within just three months.

Providing maintenance and enhancement services to the highways, rail, utilities, municipal waste and general infrastructure markets, May Gurney works primarily with the public sector and regulated sector customers across the UK. The installation comes as part of a broader corporate programme of efficiency to assist the delivery of May Gurney's Sustainable Management Programme.

"Having the Cybit solution has been a business revelation, both for tactical operation and corporate business efficiency management – even in such a short space of time," commented Martin Potter, operations director for May Gurney Highway Services. "We are using the data produced to benefit our business from a cost, mobile worker safety and service perspective."

The Highways sector performs largely reactive maintenance tasks such as repairing potholes, collapsed drains and damage caused by fallen trees. Because of the need to respond quickly, real-time visibility is highly important to May Gurney.

"We need to see where our engineers are when an urgent call comes in," continued Martin Potter, "otherwise we don't know who's in a position to deal with the incident most effectively. We now have all the live information available to effectively manage the process of identifying the most suitable resource – on a location and skill basis."

In addition to the cost saving benefits, closer engineer management has also enabled uplift in service and end-customer communication.

Identifying vehicle utilisation has enabled further savings to be made: May Gurney is also reporting a fleet reduction of five percent.

"We use our fleet smarter now. We noticed one instance where one of our smaller vehicles was making trips backwards and forwards for most of the day, when a larger vehicle could have the same effect in just one trip – a far more effective use of resources. It fits in perfectly with our business-wide drive for efficiency as well. We have everyone in the organisation working towards making the business more efficient," added Martin Potter.

May Gurney believes that telematics is also having a positive impact on the safety of its mobile workers.

"We see highly informative reports that enable us to work with our drivers and make them more aware of where they can contribute – both in terms of the routes they take and their driving practices – most noticeably with speed and route planning where we can take preventative action alongside our drivers," concluded Martin Potter.

The Fleetstar-Online solution is fully web-enabled, which enables May Gurney's different fleet and operations managers to all access the system at any time, from anywhere. This allows all major stakeholders in the operation to monitor activity and help further improve the service.

John Wisdom, Cybit's Sales and Marketing Director said: "The key driver for uptake of this technology is that we give companies a wealth of strategic information around fuel, costs and care. Fleet tracking helps identify inefficiencies and areas of Health & Safety care very quickly. We are proud to be associated with a leading brand like May Gurney and look forward to working with them as a trusted partner on their telematics journey."
