Compass Informatics at GIS Ireland 2009

Dublin, 8 Oct 2009 - Irish geographic information technology firm, Compass Informatics Ltd, based in Blackrock, Dublin, Ireland, will be presenting at Ireland’s national GI conference, GIS Ireland 2009, to be held at the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin on 14 October. At the conference, Compass’ Paul Mills and Seth Girvin will be presenting a paper on “Uses of GIS in optimizing eel management in Irish rivers”. Compass Informatics is an information management and analysis company focused on applications in environmental management and planning areas. Compass’ GIS and ICT services and expertise have been used by more than 25 local and central government agencies in recent years, with numerous contracts on-going in support of environmental planning, monitoring and information management, support for implementation of EC Directives, plus transport, urban and rural planning, resource planning and management - and more.

In its work for organisations including the Environmental Protection Agency, River Basin District projects, local authorities, central government, and also NGOs, the company and its associates bring a combined expertise in policy, planning, alongside an in-depth data creation and analysis knowledge and proven system design and development expertise. Compass plays a leading role in data management and analysis in relation to compliance with a range of EU Directives including the Water Framework Directive, Floods Directive, Habitats Directive, as well as many national regulations.

Compass have also been conducting a series of INSPIRE Directive Master Classes in Ireland since May this year, targeted specifically at central and local government staff who will be responsible for implementing the Directive over the coming years. Feedback from attendees has been very positive, expressing appreciation for raising awareness and increasing their knowledge of the technical requirements and timing of the Directive’s implementation.

Further Master Classes are planned for this autumn and throughout next year, including a detailed examination of how government agencies are to achieve harmonisation or interoperability for those datasets that are to be INSPIRE compliant in the coming years. The focus is on freely available open source tools, such as the metadata editing and web publishing functionality provided by GeoNetwork Opensource and related INSPIRE harmonisation and interoperability tools developed as part of EU-funded research projects, such as HUMBOLDT.
