Babergh District Council goes with Cadcorp SIS

Babergh District Council replaces its existing GIS facilities with Cadcorp SIS-based, web-enabled solution

New system will provide council-wide and public access to up-to-date information and enable improved service delivery.

Digital mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) software developer Cadcorp has announced that it has been awarded a contract by Babergh District Council for the supply and implementation of a new GIS based on Cadcorp SIS desktop and Cadcorp GeognoSIS web-based software.

The new GIS comprises licences of Cadcorp SIS Map Modeller for 3D-enabled map creation, design and advanced analysis; Map Editor for ‘super users’ requiring advanced data editing, topology and spatial analysis tools; and GeognoSIS to provide dynamic, web-based GIS facilities for ‘casual users’ and the general public.

“The implementation of a new GIS is the result of a LAMP (Local Authority Modernisation Programme) project that the council undertook with the aim of improving services delivery through the increased use of electronic methods,” explained Barry Wilkinson, senior information officer, Babergh District Council. “This highlighted the need for us to replace our existing GIS software. The choice of Cadcorp SIS on the desktop and GeognoSIS as our new web-enabled GIS was made on the grounds of the software’s ease-of-use, its value for money and the fact that it delivers all the functionality we require, both now and in the future,” he added.

Cadcorp SIS will be integrated into Plantech’s Accolaid application, the council’s main operations support software, to provide embedded GIS capabilities for planning, building control, enforcement, land charges, tree preservation, listed buildings, street numbering and naming and the Local Land and Property Gazetteer (LLPG). It will also be integrated with Northgate’s M3, the council’s environmental health system.

Cadcorp GeognoSIS will be used to provide web-based GIS facilities and access to centrally-stored spatial and non-spatial information for council staff who have a need for mapping data, as well as to enable citizens to find the information they need, using maps rather than text-based searches.

“Among the benefits we expect from the new GIS are improved working methods, the ability for council staff and citizens to access information more readily and to use it more effectively with speedier analysis and return of land charges and other information searches,” said Wilkinson.
