The British Cartographic Society has announced a series of free educational seminars in support of its Better Mapping 2006 campaign.
The-one day seminars, which are taking place throughout England, Scotland and Wales over the coming weeks, will explore the concepts and value of good map design and give delegates practical guidance on how to make great maps using a Geographical Information System.
The British Cartographic Society, a UK-based charity, aims to promote good practice throughout the UK geospatial industry and these seminars will explore the fundamental aspects of map making and how simple tools and techniques can be used to improve the quality of the cartographic output.
The four Better Mapping Seminars will take place in London on the 30th October, Cardiff on the 7th November, Liverpool on the 23rd November and finally Edinburgh on the 30th November.
Each seminar is free to attend and offers delegates a mix of instructor led training, practical advice and one to one interaction. For further information visit www.cartography.org.uk or to register for one of the Better Mapping seminars visit www.surveymonkey.com/bettermapping or call/fax +44 (0)1823 665775.
"Without good design and careful consideration of the fundamental elements of cartography, maps simply are not worth the paper on which they are printed," said Mary Spence, who was recently awarded an MBE for her contribution to map design and map-making, and is currently President of the British Cartographic Society. "As a nation we have a rich history of map making that has a deserved worldwide reputation for quality, it is therefore essential that modern GI professionals have the knowledge and skills to continue to produce great maps."
As part of the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) Continuing Professional Development Programme (CPD) and the Royal Geographical Society with IBG (RGS-IBG) Chartered Geographer scheme, delegates at these seminars will be able to use their attendance as part of their annual training objective.
The Better Mapping seminars are also supported by some of the UK's leading GI organisations that will be demonstrating their products and services at an accompanying trade exhibition. These includes the Association for Geographic Information, British Geological Society, Cities Revealed, Collins Bartholomew, Cosmographics, ESRI (UK), Geo-Innovations, Lovell Johns, The Map Shop, Ordnance Survey, Scotprint, Stirling Surveys, UK GeoForum, United Kingdom Hydrographic Office, and The XYZ Digital Map Company.

Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.HERE IS THE DEAL
This month my column (see "keeping an open eye" www.geoconnexion.com/uploads/
keepingopeneye_ukv7i3.pdf) may not be for the faint-hearted. I’m afraid the gloves are off and I am going to have a go at some licensing practices but I’ll try to offer some alternatives along the way. There is one in particular where I’m throwing down the gauntlet (what’s with these gloves and gauntlets!?) to all of you who have issues with public sector derived data licensing. Pick it up and together we will mould an alternative OS derived data licensing model that we can propose to government to help encourage geographic innovation especially in the public sector.
I'M A SOFTWARE SUPPLIER SO WHAT DO I CARE?
I’m a software supplier so it shouldn’t affect me too much... but it does. It is hindering business in general. The government has just released its budget and are saying things like more ‘collective buying power’, ‘greater commercialisation of… More…
