Annual Thames Gateway event .....

Annual Thames Gateway event showcases power of geographic information

Ordnance Survey will be exhibiting at this year's Thames Gateway Forum event, highlighting how its intelligent geographic information is supporting the region's redevelopment.

The forum, hosted in the Excel Centre in London on 28-29 November, is an exciting opportunity to see the progress of one of Europe's largest redevelopment projects.

Ordnance Survey and its partners will be there demonstrating how powerful, tailored solutions using geographic information are being used
across the entire project to help achieve the vision of a thriving Thames Gateway.

To help celebrate this, Ordnance Survey has commissioned a special 'Thames Gateway Map'. It focuses on the progress that has been made in the region over the last 12 months - all connected through the common view of location.

This unique map is the result of a partnership between several organisations, each sharing their own data about this diverse area. The result is a powerful demonstration of the value of geographic information.

Up-to-date details from Thames Gateway Executive; Natural England; RSPB; English Heritage; Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation; mhs homes; Environment Agency; GiGL; and London, Essex and Kent Wildlife Trusts have been overlaid on Ordnance Survey's very latest information.

This combination of essential data illustrates the complexities of the area in a straightforward and easy-to-understand way. The map highlights not just the plans for the industrial brownfield sites but also the areas that are being developed as green spaces and parks. The Gateway's architectural heritage is also put in the spotlight as well as the hubs
earmarked for urban regeneration.

James Brayshaw, Ordnance Survey Director, says, "Our activities are focused on providing the definitive geographic context for the places we all live and work in. Businesses, organisations and individuals depend on our authoritative and reliable location data every day. That's why from the start of the Thames Gateway project our geographic information
is crucial for the delivery of a sustainable living environment."

This Month's Burning Issue...
Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.
This month's burning issue:

HAVE WE REALLY LEARNT THE LESSONS FROM LAST YEAR’S FLOODS?

Flooding costs associated with extreme weather, both financial and emotional, have increased considerably over the last decade, and experts have predicted this trend is set to continue.

Paul Livett, Chairman of GroundSure looks into how increasing the use of flood risk information in property transactions can help to ensure both residential and commercial transactions are conducted on a truly informed basis, with buyers being made aware of environmental risks prior to purchase.

Over 2.2 million homes and small businesses in the UK are located in areas considered at risk of flooding, and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said that 570,000 of these face a high risk of flooding. The floods in June and July last year left approximately 48,000 households… More…
