Where's the risk: preparing for the unknown, responding to the known
We live in an uncertain world - with recent world events illustrating the devastating and costly impacts, both socially and economically on regions and local communities.
Earthquakes, landslides, severe winter conditions, environmental and industrial incidents, health epidemics, and major and localised flooding, are examples of potentially catastrophic events which can place significant pressures on governments and authorities. Whilst the UK, is not at risk from some of the more extreme natural hazards, nonetheless the competent authorities must still have contingency plans in place to respond to various types of disaster. In the vast majority of cases, a large number of organisations will need to work closely together, at very short notice.
Invariably, the availability of appropriate, accurate and up-to-date information, and the means to map, analyse and communicate it, are major factors in the ability of blue-light services, military, local authorities and other agencies to assess and mount an effective and efficient response and to ensure resources are targeted and utilised in an efficient and timely way, both during the incident and in its aftermath.
This conference brings together some of the key players working both internationally and locally to demonstrate how Geographic Information and technologies can be vital in this planning and response process to support community emergency planning efforts.
This event should have wide appeal to delegates from the public and private sector, not only those involved directly in planning for 'risk' events and those who might supply data, but also to the GI world more generally.
The event will be followed by a networking social event for AGI members and prospective members in La Tasca from 5pm. Refreshment costs are not included in the price of the main event. Please join us and become part of the Northern Ireland GI Community
