3D Laser Mapping launches MineMapper

3D Laser Mapping launches MineMapper

Nottingham, UK, 03 December 2007 - 3D Laser Mapping, the UK based laser-scanning specialist, has developed a mining industry version of its world renowned StreetMapper system. MineMapper uses the latest mobile laser scanning technology combined with high precision positioning systems to capture highly accurate and detailed measurements on the move.

MineMapper is ideally suited for the mining environment as the system can be deployed on a range of vehicles to suit all terrains. When combined with 3D Laser Mapping’s SiteMonitor software it can automatically create detailed 3D models of the mining operation including highly accurate depletion surveys, slope stability models, stockpile measurements and mine wide terrain map updates.

“MineMapper is an obvious addition to our existing, well respected, range of solutions for the mining industry,” said Dr Graham Hunter, Managing Director of 3D Laser Mapping. He continued, “By combining proven mobile technology with software specifically developed for the mining industry we can help improve safety, increase production and deliver a range of operational advantages.”

MineMapper comprises a series of vehicle-mounted laser scanning units together with an on-board positioning system that uses satellite technology and an INS navigation system. Each scanner transmits an optical pulse from a known position and at a known direction and angle and records the time taken for the beam to be ‘bounced’ back to the receiving unit. The speed of light is then used to calculate the exact position of the feature from the laser unit.

The MineMapper laser survey system can capture up to 40,000 measurements per second with a typical accuracy of 3-5cm, while on the move. Multiple scanners provide a wide field of view maximising the data capture operation, minimising disruption to the mining operation and reducing risk to personnel and equipment. MineMapper is easy to operate and can be mounted on virtually any type of vehicle including, off road 4x4, quad bike or boat. Unlike traditional airborne survey systems MineMapper is not restricted by weather conditions, is easy to use and offers significant cost savings.

3D Laser Mapping is a specialist in laser scanning solutions, the Riegl Premier Distributor for the UK, Ireland and sub-Saharan Africa and the leading distributor of TerraScan software. 3D Laser Mapping integrates laser scanner hardware systems with their own software and peripherals to create robust solutions for sectors such as mapping, mining and manufacturing.

This month's burning issue:

MANAGING CLIMATIC RISK

Russell Osborne, Managing Director of Citizen Solutions for Northgate Public Services, comments on managing climate risk in the economic downturn.

During tough economic times, bold steps must be taken to ensure the long-term prosperity of the UK’s communities, economy and natural environment. As outlined in the 2008 Pre-Budget Report, the public sector is to act as the vehicle driving growth in the UK economy. We must make sure that… More…
