Ordnance Survey helps Scouts to be prepared at 21st World Scout Jamboree 2007

The national mapping agency of Great Britain, Ordnance Survey, will be at this year’s 21st World Scout Jamboree, running a host of exciting hands‑on events for everyone from Beavers to Scout leaders.

Over 40,000 Scouts from all over the world are expected to visit this year’s 21st World Scout Jamboree hosted in Chelmsford from 27 July until 8 August.

A team of expert volunteers from Ordnance Survey will be on hand every day of the Jamboree, to pass on a host of map-reading and navigation skills and expertise. What’s more, all the activities have been specifically designed to take into account the requirement of the Adventure, Map Reader and Navigator activity badges.

Vanessa Lawrence, Ordnance Survey’s Director General and Chief Executive, says, “We’re absolutely delighted to be at this year’s World Scout Jamboree. The activities that we will be running are an exciting and very hands-on way to learn about the skills of map reading, orienteering and navigation.

“This event, coupled with our annual Free maps for 11-year-olds scheme and The Ordnance Survey Outdoors Show demonstrates our commitment to education, to young people and to everyone having the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors.”

Activities running throughout the Jamboree will include a walking navigation skills workshop teaching the skills needed to read a map by understanding contours, grid references and symbols. In addition, Ordnance Survey experts will be demonstrating satnav equipment courtesy of Garmin as well as more traditional compass and landmark identification skills.

There will be four very different orienteering courses to challenge all ages and abilities, encouraging everyone to put the skills they’ve learnt into practice, with great team and individual prizes up for grabs.

Furthermore, Scout leaders need not feel left out thanks to specialist workshops designed to help teach the skills of navigation, with a chance to get some hands‑on experience to take away with them.
