Intergraph’s vision for SDI

Intergraph’s vision for SDI

Ralph Diment describes his view of what is SDI and gives a flavour of the development of Intergraph’s strategy from its earliest days in 1994 to current challenges of true SDI implementation to achieve collaborative workflows and data interaction on a foundation of open spatial services.

Asset maps at your fingertips

digdat is a web-based utility information service that enables authorised users to view maps of buried assets. It gives utility companies the opportunity to provide third parties with online access to their maps to ensure assets are avoided when works are carried out. Ellie Player explains.

Automated Generalisation in Germany

Automated Generalisation in Germany

Whilst at Intergeo this September, GEOConnexion UK editor, Maria Pellegrini saw a demonstration of the exciting cartographic generalisation project being undertaken by AdV who co-ordinate surveying in Germany. The project relies on software supplied by 1Spatial. This article by Sabine Urbanke of AdV and Steven Ramage of 1Spatial outlines the system and its ambitious goal to provide up to date mapping on demand covering the whole of Germany.

Put the GIS professional at the heart of the LI organisation

Fresh from the speaker platform at GeoCommunity 09, Jon Winslow, Global Portfolio Director for Location Intelligence at Pitney Bowes Business Insight argues that the democratisation of GIS and the commoditisation of mapping is already upon us, so how can the GIS professional facilitate a location intelligent future?

Avon calling!

The Association for Geographic Information broke all records in staging its annual GeoCommunity conference in Stratford-Upon-Avon under this year’s theme, ‘Realising the value of place’. That value is set to grow as the line between traditional and neogeography becomes ever more blurred

Fitness for purpose: the geoweb’s cultural challenge

The public debate over personal data provides a useful framework for examining a common cultural challenge for the GI community, says James Cutler

Are Data fit for Purpose

Are Data fit for Purpose

Uncertainty in the reliability of data is particularly serious in the area of climate and carbon measurements which may be used in the climate change debate. Neil Campbell of the National Physics Laboratory discusses what is being done to produce a step change in accuracy and reliability of the data for their correct classification and usage.

Flood Mapping and Flood Modelling

Flood mapping using GIS applications plays a key role in calculating and communicating flood risk information. In less than two decades the technology has moved from manual drawing to a sophisticated and automated process in which modelling and mapping are integrated. In this article Rahman Khatibi outlines the evolution of integrated flood modelling and mapping, highlighting some of the opportunities and barriers to further progress.

David Mole, Managing Director at Landmark Environment, provides an insight into the opportunities and challenges facing environmental consultants in 2010.

Over the last year there have been numerous events that have impacted upon the environmental consultancy sector. More recently the progress report from the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) issued a clarion call to government to take steps to further reduce carbon emissions, as well as make buildings and industry more efficient. December’s UN Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen has only compounded the sense of urgency for the UK to identify and deliver solutions to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Looking ahead to 2010, we know the impacts of climate change are already finding their way onto the consultancy agenda. A recent poll among Landmark’s clients found that consultancies expect flood risk assessment to be the biggest growth area for their business during 2010. Carbon footprinting and the energy assessment… More…
