ePSIplus Thematic Network Meetings

July 23, 2007 - The ePSIplus Thematic Network is organising fifteen international expert Thematic meetings designed to debate a wide range of issues and to arrive at a consensus on recommendations for the 2008 review of the PSI directive (2003/98/EC of 17 November 2003). The findings and recommendations from these Thematic meetings will be validated at a pre-review conference organised by the ePSIplus Network in close cooperation with the European Commission.

Details at:
www.epsiplus.net/epsiplus/events/thematic_meetings/law_and_regulation/meeting_2

Registration is open for the second of a series of three thematic meetings planned by the ePSIplus Network to focus on Law and Regulation topics related to PSI re-use.

The focus is on an important PSI sector - Cultural Heritage, including information held by libraries, museums and archives. Public sector organisations holding such information are currently exempt from the scope of the PSI Directive and a legitimate question arises about whether there is a case for bringing cultural information under the scope of the Directive. This meeting will address this question and bring together key representatives and experts from various cultural information value chains as well as experts on aspects surrounding exploitation of PSI (such as legal, copyright and policy issues). The meeting will have a highly interactive character and participants will have the chance to bring forward their views.

This Month's Burning Issue...
Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.
This month's burning issue:

What message are we sending to senior level decision makers about the importance and value of Spatial Data Infrastructure - SDI - if we keep misrepresenting what SDI is or is all about?

In previous editorials in this magazine I have touched on various SDI issues, especially now that the pan-European SDI has achieved a legally mandated status within the European Union's 27 Member States. Yet I fear that the Geographic Information community - or communities, for there are many - continue to… More…
