con terra GmbH offers security solution in InFoGIS

Regulating Access for Specialist Forestry Data (according to protection requirements).

A security solution developed by con terra GmbH has been implemented in InFoGIS, the information component of the Baden-Württemberg forestry geoinformation system, to regulate the visibility and discoverability of information to specific users. InFoGIS has been integrated as a GIS module in the forestry operational, communication and business management system, known as FOKUS 2000, which is run by the state forestry administration.

Both the specialist forestry data and the geobasis data are supplied by services (ArcIMS and transactional WFS) which access a centralised database.

So as to comply with data protection requirements, access control is needed, both for the display of maps using ArcIMS and for the collection and maintenance of data using WFS-T.

The web security service (WSS) is the central component for controlling access to ArcIMS and WFS-T services. This service is positioned between the application and the GIS service, and monitors the communication between the two. It ensures that only authorised queries are dealt placed by a user with the applicable rights. The system is able to regulate both whether a user is authorised to exercise reading and writing rights on the data and that only the rights for defined spatial areas are issued to each user.

This Month's Burning Issue...
Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.
This month's burning issue:

What message are we sending to senior level decision makers about the importance and value of Spatial Data Infrastructure - SDI - if we keep misrepresenting what SDI is or is all about?

In previous editorials in this magazine I have touched on various SDI issues, especially now that the pan-European SDI has achieved a legally mandated status within the European Union's 27 Member States. Yet I fear that the Geographic Information community - or communities, for there are many - continue to… More…
