On 17 March 2006, FIFA announced the 10 South African stadiums that will host the 19th Football World Cup from 11 June 2010 — the first ever World Cup on African soil.
Spot Image, a subsidiary of EADS-Astrium, presents these 10 stadiums, as seen from space by the Kompsat-2 satellite. Five of the stadiums have been renovated and the surrounding areas improved. The other five have been specially built. These satellite images show how the stadiums — a symbol of the new face of South Africa — integrate with the urban landscape.
The ten stadiums seen by satellite Five stadiums have been renovated and the surrounding areas redeveloped, while the other five were built from scratch. These onemetre-resolution satellite images show how the buildings form part of the urban environment. The stadiums have come to symbolize the new South Africa, and, as can be seen on the satellite images, their urban setting and architecture testify not only to a physical reality but to the power of human imagination.
