Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson to Open GeoTec 09

San Francisco, April 3, 2009 – GeoTec Media announced today that its 23rd annual GeoTec Event will be held June 1-4, 2009, at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Center (VCEC) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Conference programming and exhibition details are now online. Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson will open the event on June 2 at 8:30. Mayor Robertson is a visionary who plans on dealing with the social issues facing Vancouver, as well as focusing on making Vancouver "a city that people want to live and invest in." In an inaugural address presented to the Vancouver Board of Trade on March 12, Mayor Robertson outlined some of his goals. "The brand that we want to create from the Olympics needs to focus on our strengths. It needs to be about the new economy, new ideas, where the world is going, not where it’s been. The brand that I envision Vancouver putting out to the world in 2010 is all about innovation, entrepreneurship, creativity and sustainability.” Mayor Robertson will discuss the ways GIS and other technologies will help achieve these and other goals.

GeoTec 09

Sponsored by GeoTec Media, publisher of GeoWorld magazine and developer of the Web portal geoplace.com, the 2009 GeoTec Event is themed “Going for Geospatial Gold” in recognition of Vancouver as the host city for the 2010 Olympics. The presentations will address the critical issues facing geospatial practitioners today, with a focus on those particularly relevant to British Columbia. Emergency and disaster management; homelessness; data availability; natural resource management; health care; and infrastructure planning and management are the key issues the 2009 GeoTec Event will be addressing through a combination of presentations, workshops and panel discussions.

Programming Highlights

The 2009 GeoTec Event includes 10 full and half-day workshops, two panel discussions, and more than 90 individual presentations. Workshop topics include:

* Zen and the Art of Map-Design
* Grid-based Map Analysis and Modeling
* A Practical Review of the Quantitative Geospatial Information Integration in GIS
* Introduction to iMapBC and Web Mapping
* Using GeoBC Data In Your Google Earth Presentations
* Automated CAD & GIS Integration for Better Asset Data Management
* Data Custodianship – Whose Line is it Anyway?
* iMapBC Basics
* The GeoPDF File Format - Connecting the World to Geospatial Data
* Integrated Land and Resource Registry (ILRR)

A timely panel discussion, “Value Proposition: Increasing Efficiencies in Challenging Economic Times,” will offer the audience ways in which geospatial technologies can assist with maintaining profitability in difficult economic times. GeoWorld magazine editor, Todd Danielson, will be facilitating an “Industry Outlook” panel discussion, which will take the popular annual magazine feature to a live and highly interactive level. GeoWorld magazine’s editorial advisory board members will be on hand to provide insights into what they think are the most important issues of the near future and how they will affect the geospatial technology industry, as well as to answer questions from the audience.
