Ubisense Real-Time Location for Cordes & Simon

Dortmund - 13. Aug 2007 - Since going into production on 9th July 2007 at their site in Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany, Cordes & Simon, the international logistics company, is able to precisely document the progress of all shipments using an integrated video, bar-code and location system. The solution is able to capture in real-time the status of all goods in the 5,000 m2 facility, providing the capability to present the information related to any shipment at any instant in the past at the press of a button.

"The high precision of the Ubisense real-time location system enables the position of the shipments to be stored to an accuracy of 15cm at the moment they are scanned. This position can then be related to camera pictures, often from several different camera locations, to provide automatically a record of shipment number, time and visual documentation", explains Uwe Knickmeier, the Ubisense project manager.

eseg e.u.r.o. security group is delivering the consultancy, integration, installation and support services for the combined system. "This level of location accuracy combined with the ability to present the data with zero latency means that a new era in material flow documentation has just begun", observe Joerg Lammerich and Udo Rieger, the joint managing directors at eseg.

"The system is enabling Cordes & Simon to focus our thoughts and activities even more on the requirements and expectations of our customers", commented Frank Irslinger, southern region director at Cordes & Simon. "The process of locating and correcting misdirected or damaged shipments is being carried out in a fraction of the time required before introducing the solution."

In summary, the introduction of this integrated system results in a step change as far as improving the quality of shipment tracking in high density freight networks.

This Month's Burning Issue...
Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.
This month's burning issue:

What message are we sending to senior level decision makers about the importance and value of Spatial Data Infrastructure - SDI - if we keep misrepresenting what SDI is or is all about?

In previous editorials in this magazine I have touched on various SDI issues, especially now that the pan-European SDI has achieved a legally mandated status within the European Union's 27 Member States. Yet I fear that the Geographic Information community - or communities, for there are many - continue to… More…
